Pet Theft Awareness week

The increases in pet theft is unbelievable. Where I live dogs are often stolen to be used in illegal dog fights. It’s awful to think that someone would take another’s beloved pet at all, but to think they then might be mistreated is unbearable.

This week is Pet theft Awareness week in the UK and www.pettheft.co.uk have produced the following information which I’d like to share:

A5_PTAW_viovet_dogunion_v4If your dog is stolen then here’s some advice of what to do:

  • Act quickly! The quicker you act, the greater the chance you have of getting your dog back
  • If your dog is micro-chipped, which he will need to be by law in 2016, report your dog as missing with Petlog.org.uk immediately
  • If your dog is snatched from you, try to take photographs of the person or vehicles used in the crime. Write down as much info as you can straight away
  • Contact the police immediately
  • Contact friends and start an immediate search of the area
  • Consider areas where you think thieves might take your dog
  • Put a message out on all your social networks – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – along with a recent photo of your dog and ask friends to share and spread the word. Never underestimate the power of social media!
  • If you have not done already activate your dog’s microchip details on DogLost.co.uk and visit their site for help and information
  • Put a poster up in your police station – maybe one of the police officers will see it and recognise your pet
  • Contact your local dog warden, as there is a chance that thieves might dump your dog if they think they’re close to getting caught
  • Post details on Petlog’s Lost & Found page on Facebook

More information can be found on their website: www.pettheft.co.uk

  1. Great post Misaki – the thought of having a pet stolen is awful, especially if they could be used in fights 😦

  2. Good advice, M. I worry when Mom gets an email alert of a lost pet and there’s no poster and no picture because the owners never registered the microchip and added all the important details.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  3. Good advice Misaki. Have a marvellous Monday and Happy St Patrick’s Day.
    Best wishes Molly

Great post Misaki .it is a huge crime here too..in our country the thieves often leave marks outside houses they have identified with dogs they want stolen. This way they can come back when the time is right, they are used also for fighting or baiting…disgusting beyond belief..the same people get Free to good home dogs for the same purpose. It was noticed odd marks on some suburban footpaths etc and the connection made…so be aware this is another sign they are in the area. There is a special place for those that use these poor dogs..and I wouldn’t want to be there! hugs to you sweet girl Fozziemum xxx

Getting lost is bad, but being stolen is even worse!

Misaki what horrible sub-humans to steal a beloved pet then train it to fight.

So sad but good to post. The more we talk about it and the more aware we are of it, the more we can protect each other. 😦

Thank you so very much for sharing this information, Misaki. I had thought that illegal dog fighting and stealing dogs as “bait” was something found only in America. I am saddened to learn that it is a problem in the UK as well. I applaud your government for making microchipping mandatory by 2016. I wish the USA would do the same! Happy St Paddy’s Day, dear Misaki!

  9. Wow Misaki, you stay safe!!!

  10. Thanks for a great post, Misaki. I hope from the bottom of my heart that all people will protect their dogs. And I hope once pets will be not “only” properties in the eyes of the law.

  11. PigLove says:

This is great advice. It really hurts my soul to think of people dog-napping my anipals. That is such an outrage and gets my fur all standing up. It’s a really sad society that we live in these days to have this going on. Please be safe my dear friend. XOXO – Bacon

  12. Dog fighters will take pets right out of their backyards, leaving the gate ajar so people think their dog just got out. That’s one reason your pets should NEVER be left out unattended!

  13. Frankie and Ernie says:

This is a SCARY trend. WE despise the thought of Dog Fighting. It is Vicious and Horrid.

  14. It is so sad that people would do that. Thanks for sharing this info . . . .

  15. Will and Eko says:

That’s a scary thought. Eko is microchipped and I don’t leave him while shopping but it’s still good to be prepared and cautious.

  16. Two French Bulldogs says:

Hopefully everyone is aware of how common this is
    Happy St. Patrick’s Day

  21. Laika says:

In the past no one would steal a big dog, but nowadays I think some people would steal any dog. It’s awful to think about. In Denmark dogs should be micro chipped by the law. We hope we never get to use it. Have a nice day.

  22. Misaki THANK YOU for this most important post!!! These tips sure apply for all of us!!!! We shared! Barks and licks and love, Dakota and Caren

  24. Wow! what a scary thing to think about Misaki! I sometimes think about what it would be like to be lost, but being stolen is just unimaginable. Thanks for all the good advice!

  25. The OP Pack says:

Great post, Misaki. Sadly we do hear about pets being stolen here too. The scary part is how fast it can happen. We feel very badly for anyone, human or furry, who has to go through such a horrible experience.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day from all of us.

  26. Good post. Whee were shocked and disgusted recently when somefurry stole a guinea pig. The piggy was the beloved pet of a disabled child and also quite elderly. Sadly she was never returned to her family. Whee hope she is okay wherever she ended up.

It’s so sad to see and hear these stories. Whee don’t understand why hoomans can do this and get away with it as if it were a tv or mobile phone stolen.

Thanks for raising awareness that it’s all sorts of pets that are stolen

  27. Valuable information! There are all sorts of scoundrels out in the world who would steal a pet!!

    Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

  28. Coccolino says:

Wow, thanks for sharing, Misaki. That’s absolutely horrible to hear that so many pets are stolen for fighting 😦

  29. Such a good post Misaki! Lots of good info, I’m sure I would bite their ass if they tried and take me!!!
    Kisses,
    Ruby ♥

  30. What a great recognition week! I love that the microchip will be mandatory. I had a dog stolen years ago and I still cringe knowing what might have happened to him. It is a horrible thing for a pet owner to endure. Thanks for sharing!

  31. Robin says:

It is crazy that there is that much pet theft. You would think that there are enough pets to go around so that people could get their own pets. Then again, that would be using logic – not something humans are apt to do. I’m sure there are also malicious reasons for it too.

  32. bichonpawz says:

Hi there Misaki…we are stopping by to say Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Wow Misaki & Dawn: I shudered to think of a family pet being used in a dog fight ring….oh that would be a fate worse than death…literally….
Thank you for all the tips.
Do you know when Nylablue is out in her Condo I will not even leave her to go inside to the loo unless my neighbor is out on her patio & will watch NB…people think me bonkers but I know a beloved pet can be snatched in seconds.
I tell my friends who have dogs to NOT bring them out & then tie them up outisde a store…they too think I am mad….I say better safe than sorry….
    Sherri-Ellen & Nylablue xoxoxo

    • Misaki says:

it truly is awful. Our garden is completely enclosed with no rear access or anything, and yet mummy will constantly check on me if I’m out there. Definitely would leave me outside a shop, but you see so many dogs left. It really is worrying

  36. Nylabluesmum says:

We can not bee too carefull deze dayz..dere are so many nastee peeple out dere. Lub Nylalbue =^,,^=

  37. I often think it would be nice to have a pet door so Honey could go outside when she wants to. But I’m terrified that someone would take her.

Thanks for the good tips. I hope I never have to use them.

  38. Good advice Misaki – I’m keeping my paws crossed my humans never ever have to use them! *waggy tail*

  39. snoopys@snoopysdogblog says:

Great that you’re getting awareness out! I can’t believe people would want to do that, it’s time to stand together and fight back and look out for each other!

    Gonna share,

    I hope you’re having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂
