Scoop that Poop!

I’m joining in with Gizmo and Sugar‘s Scoop that Poop blog hop:-)

stp_logoIn an ideal world someone would invent a spray just like in the film Envy which makes dog poop disappear. Although the film never quite gets to the bottom of where the poop actually goes (and it turns out that Vapoorize is poisonous!), the concept would make life a lot easier don’t you think? But in the real world we have dog poo bags. I just wish more people used them.

As well as failing to pick up after their dogs, I’ve noticed that some people seem to discard their used bags on the floor, which isn’t much better. This is particularly noticeable on the towpaths by the river near where we live. You have to walk about hour to find a bin and on a hot day with a full poop bag in one hand and a lead in another mummy can sympathise a little. We both hope (possibly in vein) that the people who have left them are planning to pick them up on their way back. It doesn’t explain the bags that are thrown in the bushes though…

I’ve been trying to find solutions to this which are available in the UK. The first is a bit pricey, but I must admit sounds really good. These are Dicky Bags, which are a combined bag dispenser and used bag holder complete with an air freshner to prevent any nasty odours:

The second is a slightly cheaper option and it’s a Leash Mate. You can get these from Xtra Dog, and it’s a two bag system that attaches to your lead:

I haven’t tried either of these, (I did contact Dicky Bags but they didn’t respond to my offer to review their bags), but from reading up on them they would both save you from having to carry a used bag around until you find a bin. Personally I think a simple clip that attaches to your lead and holds the bag for you would do just as well. I know these are available in the US but so far I haven’t found them here. Hopefully someone will pick up the idea soon.

There are lots of good environmental and health reasons why you should clean up after your dog which can be found here. And of course you can be prosecuted if you fail to pick it up. So please scoop that poop!!

Please head over to Gizmo and Sugar‘s for the list of blogs featured in this hop.

  1. Excellent hop, Misaki. Hope you reach a lot of readers with this post. I have my own Poo Fairy, who cleans my toilet…well, it’s kind of the same, isn’t it 🙂

  2. This is a great post and should be highlighted regularly xxx

  3. Great post Misaki – we hate to see anyone leave their dog’s poo behind. Putting it in a non-biodegradable bag and leaving it lying around is even worse than not picking it up! If areas don’t provide enough bins it’s asking for trouble 😦

  4. fozziemum says:

Well done Misaki on the scoop on poop ! poop is so bad for transmitting disease not only to other doggies but wildlife..we think poop leavers should be made to scoop the park..or be lined up for a poop fling fest hehehe like on Madagascar…’if you have any poo…fling it now! ‘ Have a great day hugs Fozziemum xx

  5. We have tons of Poo bins where we go on walks, which is great. We always see Poop lying around that irresponsible dog owners have just left. I would like to put it through their letterbox.. BOL Great post xx0xx

    Mollie and Alfie

  6. Dalton says:

The other day typist was stepping over other dog poo to pick up after her dog!

  7. Poo is a problem with ALL animals and it would be nice if there were more spots like what Mollie described – with LOTS of poo bins available for disposal purposes so your Mummy doesn’t have to carry the bags around a lot.

    Kitty Hugs, Sammy

  8. Our park has just run a ‘there’s no such thing as the poo fairy’ campaign, including a real live fairy to launch it. Sad to say that despite this, plus more bags, plus more bins I come across full poo bags everywhere!!! I see more poo bags than poo 😦

  9. Sometimes, we see poop left behind right at the base of the sign that says, “Clean up after your dog.” It’s ironic. AND DISGUSTING!! Get it together, people!

    Love and licks,

  10. Shiva & Jaya says:

Purrime Ministerette doodies is getted rid of every day by staff. Them better. We paying them well.

  11. Madi and Mom says:

    Hey Misaki
What a great post and you are so right there is not a poop fairy. There are some who own pets as a status symbol but do not take the responsibilities of pet ownership seriously.
    Yay for your peeps.
    hugs madi your bfff

  12. Coccolino says:

What a great post Misaki! Scooping poop isn’t too much fun. At least my piggy poop isn’t too messy (well unless I step in it as I’m backtracking like usual) but poop is poop!

    ~ Coccolino the mini pig

  13. Emmadog says:

Love it! I have the poop fairy on my post today too!

  14. They sound like good solutions. Nothing worse than not being able to find a bin. Have a marvellous Monday Misaki.
    Best wishes Molly

  15. My Mom and Dad always pick up my poop cause it is super impawtant! Barks and licks and love, Dakota

  16. Kyla says:

My poop is a treasure. You don’t leave treasure around for someone to steal.

  17. Misaki, you get our votes on this one. Our biped is constantly griping about others who don’t pick up after theirs. At the dog park, she goes around picking up piles from others. We don’t like it cause it cuts into her throwing us the ball!!! Tell the U.K. that Max & Bella are being deprived of play time and they could help us and all our other furry cousins if they’d pick up after their poopy pups. Probably won’t be as effective as your grrrrrrrrrrrreat suggestions–thanks for the soap box today. wag wag, Max & Bella

  18. PigLove says:

Very well said my friend. Mom told me this weekend that if we start going for ‘walks’, we have to do this. I’m down with it. XOXO – Bacon

  19. Once my mom picked up my recycled treats, but there was no trashcan. She had it the whole day in her handbag. Imagine a bagsnatcher had stolen her bag with my “legacy”…. :o)

  20. We did a review on the leashmate from Kyjen. We really like it. It would be great if every dog owner had something that would carry full bags. I like the spray idea. LOL

  21. Will and Eko says:

Taking care of a pup isn’t always roses, but it’s a part of the job. With a little foresight it’s not much of a hassle at all. Nice to see more blogs promoting good habits like this.

  22. Frankie and Ernie says:

Excellent post…. we are TOTALLY responsible with OUR Poops… Our mom ALWAYS scoops them up. NO MATTER WHERE we leave them.

  23. Great post, Misaki! People in my neighborhood used to scoop but then leave the bag on the sidewalk or in the bushes…honestly, do they think the plastic bag is going to go away by itself?!? Finally, they put little trash bins on some of the street sign poles, so now if you scoop you do not even need to bring the bag home (or leaving it laying on the ground).

  24. Kuruk says:

Lots of pawesome poops info today! Woooowooooo, Ku

  25. FleaByte says:

Pawsitively has a cute concept on her blog today – she’s just before you in the blog hop. An adorable hip bag that’s lined with waterproof plastic. It’s cute, a disguised carrier for poop. Drop a small handful of activated charcoal in the bottom of the bag and you’re good to go.

  26. Cat Forsley says:

    tooth fairies YES
    xxx 🙂
    great post xo C

  27. Hi, we stopped by from the blog hop to meet you. We are fortunate to have Jan to pick up after us.

  28. I don’t get people who do not clean up – they will come out for the way the next day and simply step into poo they left… silly people
We use nappy bags… they are cheap, good size and smell nice (before poo is collected… just to be clear on this)

  29. Thanks for taking the time to write about this very important issue.

  30. cascadiannomads says:

Great suggestions, Misaki! The more options people have to scoop and pack it out, they will find what woks for them and be responsible.

  31. sue ellen says:

At our house the man calls it “turd hurdin”. He gets a grumpy face when ‘strangers’ do a walk by pooping in the front yard….especially because he carries our ‘poopie’ bags when we stroll about to catch any ‘fall out’ we have…..

  32. Gizmo says:

OMD I forgot about that movie…i admit that sometimes if Gizmo goes early on during a walk and I know we’ll be coming right back by i will park the bag and pick it up on the way home…One of my peeves is when the city/park/county builds poop stations with bags and a trash can, then doesn’t empty the can regularly so the fulls bags start overflowing and end up in piles on the ground…nasty…Good for you for searching out some new products available on your side of the water and thanks so much for joining our hop today

  33. Nothing is more irk-some then people who scoop and leave the bag! I admit to occasionally leaving a bag to pick up on my way back on a trail . . . but that is not the same. One of the reasons it happened in the city we use to live in was it was illegal to put dog poop in most garbage cans . . . . . . you can’t win! Lee and Phod

  34. spittythekitty says:

Woofie people in San Francisco seem to be really good about poop-scooping. The Human almost never sees woofie poops (or bags of woofie poop) laying around. The Human is not thrilled about scooping the litter, but she mostly remembers. I am a very good boy, though. Even if she forgets, I still poop and pee neatly in my box.

  35. If someone is going to take the time to pick up their dog’s poo in a baggy, then I don’t understand why they wouldn’t throw it away? I think it would be better to just leave the poo instead of adding a bag into the mix… I reviewed something on my blog designed to help with this today. I’m not sure if they ship to the UK, but they are handmade. I bet she would.

  36. speedyrabbit says:

I hate people that leave it all over the place, they give good dog owners a bad rep,xx Rachel

  37. onebluedog says:

Why oh why do people not clean up after their pups??? I know my poop is kind of ick. Actually I try to run away from it. BUT mom always cleans it up. Always! *Sigh* Hopefully some of these neat new inventions will get more people to clean it up…

  38. I had never seen the Dicky Bag before. Very interesting! I honestly don’t mind cleaning up my dogs’ poop (not that it’s my favorite thing in the world) and can’t see what the big deal is about grabbing a bag and tossing it in the can. You wouldn’t not change a baby’s diaper, right?! Cleaning up dog poop is a lot less gross than baby diapers in my opinion.

  39. Golden LOVE our TheFifthPaw but unfortunately they don’t ship international. Yes there’s no Poop Fairy. Lots of Golden Thanks for joining us on our Scoop That Poop campaign. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

  41. Garth Riley says:

    Thanks for pawticipating Misaki!

Mom has found an easy way to clip a poop bag to my leash is to use a carabiner and poop bags with handles and clip the carabiner to the loop at the end of the leash (so the carabiner & bag don’t slide down and end up hanging from the leash where it clips to my collar). You could probably find a carabiner or something similar.

  42. Jessica says:

Very well said, Misaki! Taylor, thankfully, lives in an apartment complex where there is dog poop bag dispenser and a trash container right in our front lawn! Free bags! However, Taylor is unlucky to have some neighbors who STILL leave their dog’s poop on our lawn despite this convenience! Why do some humans have a lack of common sense, Misaki? 😦

Please leave a reply I'd love to hear from you!!
