Slimed!

Last year it was so wet and rainy that our garden became THE holiday destination for slugs. Mummy went on a rampage with salt but as soon as one wave was defeated the next bus load of slug holidaymakers turned up. I didn’t mind, I kinda like the little fellas. So much so that mummy would often come downstairs to find one of my new friends on the carpet. She was not impressed.

Right about now, you’re probably thinking about lungworm. Mummy and daddy were such noobs that they didn’t know anything about lungworm and naively believed the shop assistant in the pet store when they were told it wasn’t a big issue and it was fine to give me a treatment that didn’t contain any protection against it. You can imagine the panic when they went home to read an article all about how lungworm is spread by slugs and snails and is a huge threat to dogs! You’ll be relieved to read that they now get me a decent treatment from the vets to make sure I’m completely protected.

Anyway to get back to my story, as we’ve had crazy hot weather lately the slug community decided to have stay-cations instead of visiting us so mummy relaxed her anti-slug campaign. But one or two extreme thrillseekers decided to visit Hotel Misaki despite the weather. The other night one slug decided he liked me so much he hitched a ride on yours truly for a tour around our house! Mummy was too freaked out to take any pics so this is a reconstruction:

slug

Daddy kicked Mr Slug off the tour for not paying for his ticket and mummy got the job of brushing his slime out of my fur. Sadly I think Mummy is going to war with the slugs again. Sorry slug friends, but Hotel Misaki is closed for business.

  1. Oh no… I hope your new friends will go away soon…
time for a new friends Misaki

  2. Little black slugs mum keeps finding on us LOL. We are only bringing home whatever we can find for their dinner LOL

  3. Hate hate hate slugs! Snails we can cope with but the slime-slitherers are yucky! Hope Mum wins πŸ˜‰

  4. Oh dear. Whee don’t much like slugs. About 20 or so came out of no where one night and spread all over our lawn. Mummy can’t use any slug murdering treatments because whee like to eat the grass. So the little hoomans did it the old fashioned way (Mummy was too squeamish!) with a bucket and spade, and went and dumped them on the school playing field nearby. I have a feeling they’ll be back though. Those naughty snails

Oh dear slugged again!! well sweet Misaki ..perhaps mummy needs some little containers of beer in the garden…they do like a drink..and usually that’s it..no more mr slug…too much beer makes for no more sluggies πŸ™‚
Have a great day Misaki big hugs…except for where you are slimy…Fozziemum xx

    • Misaki says:

Mummy suggested the beer idea to daddy but he thought I’d just drink the beer BOL

      • fozziemum says:

Perhaos a container with just enough room for a sluggie Misaki and not enough room at the top for a beer swilling lass such as yourself….or a brand you don’t like πŸ˜‰
        Hugs Fozziemum x

  6. Dalton says:

Typist goes out every evening with her head torch to remove all slugs and snails from eating her tomato plants !

  7. Nikitaland says:

Yucky, slugs are gross and slimy! I agree, no room for slugs over here. Hotel is closed!

  8. dougalldog says:

My peep is too freaked out to look at your picture (even if it is a reconstruction). She HATES slugs.

  9. I’d say that it was probably a wise move to close down Hotel Misaki for the season considering the little boogers can be dangerous to your health young lady! I do, however, think that reconstruction slug guy in the photo looks quite festive in his sunglasses – I bet he would have enjoyed having a swim through your furs and making himself comfy in your house.

    Have a slug-free Monday!
    Kitty Hugs, Sammy

  10. urban hounds says:

Eeek slugs I hope they are gone soon

  11. Hahaha Misaki….I made sure that SHE read your story about being slimed and it worked: SHE’S not as freaked out by the lizards that come visit us now….compared to the slugs, our lizards are nothing. I can’t thank you enough!

  12. We go on slug patrol at dusk. I sniff them out and bark and mum picks them up with a poo bag (inside out) and then drops them in a jam jar of beer. Hic πŸ™‚ Nasty slimy things – even I don’t eat them.

  13. We don’t like this evil slugs, but they are everywhere. Last year we had “slugville” in my back yard, because we had a lot of marigolds and that’s their favorite snack. My neighbor said we should dig a small hole outside of my back yard and we should place a cup in this hole. Then we should fill it with beer and the snails would come in droves for their last party.

  14. Emmadog says:

Eww…slugs sound disgusting. I have never heard of lung worm either, glad you are protected. I guess you can keep them at your house…we have enough creatures at our place already!

  15. Wow, Misaki, thank you so much for educating us about lungworms! We had no idea! It has been extra wet and rainy here this year, too, the perfect time for snails and slugs to slither about! Love from Simone the collie and Eddie & Lucy the JRs.

  16. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Now that hotel Misaki is closed don’t send them over here please. We have been despatching them like nobodys’ business but they still keep coming back. Have a marvellous slug free Monday.
    Best wishes Molly

  17. I have special stuff from the vets, so if I anciently eat one, it won’t do me harm, we have a ton in our garden. xxooxx

    Mollie and Alfie

  18. Oh no Misaki. Slugs are dangerous and yuky! We have uninvited ants at the minute in the flat and on the boat, my mum is tearing her hair out trying to pack them off in the other direction. =^.^=

  19. wow I had never heard of that condition Misaki, thanks for sharing! Hope those slugs go away! Barks and licks and love, Dakota

  20. Fizz says:

Yucky! I hate slugs too. One hitched a ride in on the Goblin a little while ago, she wasn’t happy about it either. Mummy uses Milbemax worming tablets which covers lungworm, otherwise there is Advocate which does fleas & ticks too. Hope you are enjoying the summer, you have had lots of days out & finding that pool was awesome.

  21. PigLove says:

Slugs huh? Pig shivers. Mommy is the same as your mummy – she’s not too keen on the slug fest that happens in the heat. Sometimes they have a tendency to stick to our front glass door. She very much dislikes them with a passion. You be careful of any more hitchhikers my friend. XOXO – Bacon

  22. Putting salt on their way and on top them was one of my favorite things as a kid lol
You should let slugs crawl on you and find their way to your ears, there are slug earrings:

    You’d be a fashion icon.

  23. finnhoward says:

Slugs totally creep me out!! We have one that sits by our front door and says hello to us every morning when we go on our walks. I try to drag the dogs past really quickly so they don’t lick for a quick taste!

  24. Kyla says:

I’d never heard of lung worms. I’d heard of heart worms and ear worms.

  25. Madi and Mom says:

Misaki we have slimy slugs here another good reason to stay inside
    hugs madi your bfff

  26. Will and Eko says:

Glad to know you got the right meds and kicked off the freeloaders!

  27. Kuruk says:

Ooowiegoooowie! No slugs on us pups, but kitty brother Apollo likes to roll in the garden and gets them stuck to his booty a lot. Mama has to cut the gooowie dred locks off of him.
We don’t have lungworm here, but you make sure your mummy keeps you protected Misaki! Wooooowooooooo, Ku

  28. Frankie and Ernie says:

We think SLUGS are disgusting… they are just SNAILs that Slime around… NEKKID.
IF they were FASTER… we could call them…. STREAKERS.. BaaaaaWaaaah

  29. Mags Corner says:

Thanks for posting this we had never heard about it sweet Misaki. Mumsy found 3 slugs on our front porch the other night after a rain. She always gets rid of them, she don’t like them they are way too slimy for her. She will be extra cautious about them now that we know this. Hugs and nose kisses

  30. Wow, we didn’t know about slugs and lungworm. It has been pretty wet here this week, hope there are no slug visitors in our yard.

Slime can’t be much fun to get our of thick fur like you have. Hope it didn’t mean a full B.A.T.H.

Woos – Phantom, Ciara, and Lightning

    • Misaki says:

I hope the sluggies leave you alone. I think lungworm is more of a problem in the UK but they are still nasty and slimey even without it

  31. Blah! Slugs are so icky! We had adventures with tomato worms this weekend. Thank dog the hubs was home to “take care” of them. So so so gross. **massive shudder**. Never heard of lung worm. Guess I better look it up.

  32. Ugh, we hate slugs! Luckily we don’t have many out here – although we do have snails and they are icky too.

  33. Ick! Hate slugs! Thankfully, we don’t have a problem with them here!

  34. What a slimmy experience. We didn’t know that about lungworm either, neither did our bipeds. But, we hardly get any rain here and we don’t even think we’d know a snale if it were in our food bowl. Wish it’d rain though. πŸ™‚ wag wag

  35. Slugs! Ugh! They are gnarly. I think if your mom puts dishes of beer outside, the slugs will fall in and die. Plus, maybe you can sneak a sip every now and then!

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  36. Coccolino says:

Ooh Misaki, yuck! Slugs are about as bad as worms and snakes which are what I’m having to deal with here at the new forest-y home. We hope your staycation is over VERY soon!

  37. We are glad the free loader was unloaded! Lee ad Phod

  38. Huh that’s interesting. There is a different type of worm here that can infect dog’s lungs, but it’s not the one you’re talking about it and it’s rare. I guess they aren’t a big issue around here. I feel for your mom though… I’m battling ants right now.. ugh! I kill some and then they show up somewhere else in the house…

  39. ScottieMom says:

Oh my! Keep those slugs away, Misaki!! Much love, The Scottie Mom.

  40. Dogs N Pawz says:

That is so funny! We used to have lots of slugs but for some reason they are gone. Mommy doesn’t like the slugs either! She says they are yucky!

  41. How rude!! That slug got what it deserved! hehehe
So, when Ma was little, Gma put little tuna cans of beer out for the slugs to drink and die, well, little did she know that our doggie, a Wire Hair Fox Terrier, was followin’ her around drinkin’ the beer out of the cans!!! BOL!!!! Luckily, Ma noticed by the third can, and, well, the doggie was just ‘a little’ tipsy! hehehe No more beer for the slugs ~ or the dog ~ after that!
The salt thing is much better. And, doggies won’t eat it.
    Kisses,
    Ruby β™₯

    Hey Misaki

I’m sure you can find less slimey guests to stay in your luxurious hotel buddy! πŸ™‚

    Have a fun day

  43. Marcie says:

Eek, they sound rather icky! No wonder they didn’t let it hang around long enough to get a picture! πŸ™‚

  44. In Santa Cruz where my Human visits pretty often, they have banana slugs that are like 6-8 inches long. They are DISGUSTING (though possibly tasty?) They are so common and ugly that the University there has adopted the banana slug as its official mascot! How crazy is THAT???

  45. Oh Spitty, you are a wuss! Those banana slugs are colorful and full of personality…My Mom was working at that university the year the students voted on the Banana Slug as their mascot…we have one on our fridge from UCSC…that’s where Mom and Dad met! And…I never ever knew about the lung disease slugs could cause in dogs!
