Mallies vs Sibes

I’m often mistaken for a Sibe and after a few months of repeating ‘she’s a malamute’ and explaining the differences between the two breeds, mummy and daddy have now got bored of the speech and sometimes they just nod and smile.

The main difference between us is that I’m bigger as I’m built for endurance while Sibes are sleeker as they are built for speed. Most people don’t appreciate the difference till they see Mallies and Sibes next to each other. This was posted on fb a while ago by It’s a Malamute and it really highlights the difference (although that Mallie does seem particularly big to me!):

example of a Mallie and Sibe

which ones which?? lol

The funniest times have been when I’ve met Sibes and the owners have assumed I’m also one and the reason I’m the bigger of the two is that I must be a boy (I’m not!) and/or I must be fully grown (nope – I still need to grow into my ears!).

While randomly looking up something yesterday I stumbled across the below infographic, which is a great representation of the differences between us and inspired me to write this post. I’ve wanted to write something about Mallies and Sibes for a while and the below illustration really sums up everything I wanted to say.

I’m not Sibe-bashing, they are lovely too. But I’m a Mallie:-)

Apologies for stealing this infographic to whoever created it, but am happy to give credit to whoever you are.

ps, don’t forget to keep voting for Rumpy in the World Spay Day Pageant – he’s a mallie too:-)

  8. Super interesting…….! I think both Mallies and Sibes are beautiful dogs BUT you Miss Misaki are the mostest beautifulest of them all!! šŸ˜€ šŸ˜€

  9. emma says:

Huskies are actually pretty small…not much bigger than I am, just taller šŸ˜‰ Most people don’t know the difference but if it looks like a husky but it big, it is probably a Malamute! Don’t feel bad, no one knows the breeds for my sister and I so mom always is explaining us and even put us on her business cards so she can just hand those out!

  10. …and you are a beautiful Malamute girl and I love your almond shaped eyes ;o) I think all nordic dogs are wonderful ;o)

  11. Daisy says:

That side-by-side photo really shows the difference well, and the chart is a great explanation. Interesting post!

  12. Misaki, you taught us some important things! You sure are pretty.

I know how you feel. I get sick of being mistaken for a COLLIE when Shetland Sheepdogs and Collies are two totally separate breeds!!!

  14. Mridubala says:

Hey, good share! Because I wasn’t that good in recognising breeds ! And these dogs look adorable too!

  15. cafall says:

I’ve always wondered what the difference is – I thought it was longer fur! Thank you for posting!

  16. Kyla says:

You’re not alone in getting confused. When Kenzie was with us, people wanted to know if we were the same breed. Since I was black and he was (as are all Westies) white, He’d answer not only that, but they’re identical twins.

  17. Great information, Now I can really know the difference, and seem a little smarter.

  18. catfromhell says:

Cool! Its amazing how many different types of Dogs there are!

  19. Thanks for the info! I knew that there WAS a difference, but I never really knew how to tell. The tail is a big clue, though!

  20. Excellent post! Everyone we meet thinks I’m too small b/c they assume that malis are huskies and don’t realize that I’m the perfect size — 45 lbs.

    That’s very interesting, Misaki.

  22. So interesting the differences between the two dog breeds. I loved the show and tell. Mom’s glad that she knows all your greatest strengths. Plus you are so cute too.

  25. Our lady knew the size difference and not the others, thanks for teaching her. Lee and Phod who are very small compared to you

  26. Jen says:

I’m glad you posted the breakdown of the differences! I had a suspicion, looking at the picture, which was which šŸ˜‰

  27. christine says:

Comme je comprend tout cela ! non avons le mĆŖme problĆŖme avec Eyko, je ne compte plus le nombre de fois ou l’on a entendu “oh le beau husky” …Je crois que je vais imprimer ton post et le distribuer !

  28. Ann Paws says:

I guess I never realized the differences between the two. Now that you talk about it, I can remember seeing huskies and they really aren’t all that large. I’ve seen some REALLY big dogs that look kind of like huskies – I can remember their names but not their breed lol. They were probably mallies.

  29. Great education today! Youre a grrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat teacher. šŸ™‚ Paulette

  30. I knew the difference only because, well, okay, it’s the WOOs! I just love Lightning over there at the Woo’s! He and I are like brothers from a different mother! Butts, I like your graphics, very well done gurl!
I however just thinks your FABulous!
    Kisses,
    Ruby

  31. Urban Hounds says:

Im surprised that people are confused between the too, they look quite different to me. Personally I think mals are cuter. I have had my pugs mistaken for frenchies and small english bulldogs numerous tims, which I dont get since they are such distinct breeds and common. Once someone inisted about Tubby that he did not look at all like a pug

    Hi Misaki,

We are back !! We’re sorry we didn’t visit you for a while, our human got super busy. But we missed you a lot.

Both breed are gorgeous but the difference can be difficult to see if you’re not aware of the breed. Our human always looks at the ears, which she thinks is the biggest difference to tell malli and sibe apart.

And of course, Malli can’t have blue eyes ^^

The malli in your first picture looks like a giant malli to me.

    Woos of love & cuddles.

    Your pals, Echo & Link

  33. Which one iz you..Bawaahhaaaaaw šŸ™‚ xx00xx

Hi there Misaki…this is a great blog!!! You got me thinking about my dog BOGART SAM. I was told he was a Husky/Shepherd when we got him years ago. Well I went thru the few pix I have of B-Sam & I now think he was a Sibe/Mallie cross!!! Huh!!! After all these years the mystery of BOGART SAM is solved, lol….
    Even I got confused *blushes*
Thank you for a great blog.
    Strokes from Sherri-Ellen xo

    • Hehehe, lots of people get confused and like someone said above, most people think that sibes are the size of mallies which has created alot of the confusion.
      Smoochies to you xx

      • Nylabluesmum says:

Hi Misaki: I admit I was confused. I knew there were difference & similarities….however I knew more about Foxhounds & Chihuahuas, lol….
I am convinced Bogart Sam was a Mallie with some Sibe in him….he looked like a silver wolf…so handsome……

  35. Kia says:

Interesting! People keep commenting that Simba is NOT a schnauzer, but a westie as of late LOL

  36. Dianda says:

Great info Misaki! Need to remember this!

  37. Well, that clears THAT up Misaki. I better go memorize all of that because I am one to get the Mallie and the Sibe confused. Sorry. I promise I will never call you a Sibe.

  38. You have perfect timing Misaki! I was just trying to explain the differences between the breeds to someone the other day too (even though I don’t have Malamute or a Husky myself) and they didn’t believe me! Guess where I am sending this post right now!! Have a great weekend!

  39. That’s great! Even though our Beary looks totally malamute (with traces of golden retriever if you look really closely) I’ve get asked if he’s husky too so I’ll arm myself with this information for the next person who asks.
